Hail Eris!

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Astronomers name 'world of chaos'
The distant world whose discovery prompted leading astronomers to demote Pluto from the rank of "planet" has now been given its own official name.

Having caused so much consternation in the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the object has been called Eris, after the Greek goddess of discord.

Eris is larger than Pluto, which put scientists in the fix of having to call them both planets - or neither.

Both bodies have now been put in the new classification of "dwarf planets".

Eris' discoverer, Michael Brown of the California Institute of Technology, told the Associated Press that the name was an obvious choice, calling it "too perfect to resist".

Somehow I always pictured Eris as being taller. (Waves at [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf.)

Bandwidth

Remember what I've been saying about the relative growth rates of storage and network bandwidth?

As I mentioned recently in a comment to a post on Groklaw, the bandwidth of a carrier pigeon is nothing to sneeze at. If you figure that a bird can carry two SD cards, which are up to 4GBytes these days, then a 1-hour trip will carry north of 8MBits/sec, or about 8 times the bandwidth of a T1 line.

I'm still waiting to hear that Google is trucking data around to synchronize their server farms. A couple of years, I'd guess.

I'm always surprised at how emotional some people can get about my choice of software. I get ad-hominem attacks when I mention that I prefer Emacs and LaTeX to somebody's favorite WYSIWYG word processor. I stopped allowing anonymous comments after somebody literally accused me of "child abuse" (those words, exactly) when I mentioned that my kids sometimes used Linux. I continually get snide comments whenever I mention that, as a visual illiterate and long-time X user, I find the Mac user interface unuseable. (And I'm not saying that Windows is much better, but nobody sends me hate mail when I criticize Windows.)

Seriously, I get fewer flames when I mention that I'm an agnostic Druid. In fact, I don't think anyone has flamed me about my religion recently.

I'm not asking for tolerance, exactly. Or maybe I am. At least until Linux achieves its goal of world domination. Then we'll see who...

Oh. Right. Sorry about that.

Made a little more progress on the pile of receipts. Progress still barely visible, but at least I have a little momentum going. Didn't do anything yesterday :=P.
