Cleaning the ball might not be a bad idea as well. If there's any kind of cruft on the ball, the optical sensor will "see" it, and probably misinterpret it.
What ravan and acelightning said. With mine, I take out the ball and see accumulated lint; blow it out and/or wipe it out, with a tissue or bandana, slightly moistened if necessary, and put the ball in. That fixes it. It also makes it roll easier (less resistance).
